Taking Action for Mental Health in Massachusetts
Dirty Hands Project is a Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization committed to breaking the silence around mental health and creating real, lasting change in our communities. We believe that mental health must be a priority not a stigma and we’re dedicated to rolling up our sleeves and doing the hands-on work needed to support individuals and families across the state.
Our mission is to promote mental health awareness, provide community-driven support, and create safe spaces for open conversations. Through local outreach, educational initiatives, volunteer programs, and compassionate advocacy, we empower people to speak openly about their struggles and seek the help they deserve. At Dirty Hands Project, we are not just hoping for change—we are actively building it.
Located in Massachusetts and serving surrounding communities, we strive to inspire connection, encourage healing, and strengthen mental wellness for all. Together, we can normalize asking for help, uplift those facing challenges, and make a meaningful impact one person, one story, and one honest conversation at a time.
Our Events & Projects
Rooted in love - Driven by purpose - Building hope for tomorrow
Josh and Liz Moughan founded Dirty Hands Project with one goal in mind: to change the way our communities understand and support mental health. Their mission is grounded in personal experience, shaped by deep love for their family, and inspired by the legacy of their son, Ty, whose bright spirit and passion for the outdoors continues to move others toward healing and connection.
As parents, Josh and Liz have experienced both profound joy and unimaginable loss. When their son Ty passed away, they knew they could not allow his memory or his love for life and nature to fade. Instead, they chose to turn heartbreak into purpose.
Dirty Hands Project was created to honor Ty’s legacy a living testament to the impact he had on everyone who knew him. It stands as a promise to keep his spirit alive by helping others find hope, healing, and connection. Through this work, Josh and Liz encourage all of us to roll up our sleeves, support one another, and make mental health a priority for every family, every community, and every individual.
Rooted in heart - Driven to serve - Dedicated to hope
Jack Moughan
I believe deeply in the fundamental connection between mental health and nature. Just as the great outdoors can present unexpected obstacles, steep climbs, and challenging terrain, mental health can bring experiences that feel overwhelming or insurmountable. Both require patience, perseverance, and a willingness to engage fully with the process.
Much like encountering a downed tree on a trail, mental health challenges often require us to roll up our sleeves, get our hands dirty, and take active steps to overcome the obstacle in front of us. By facing these challenges head-on and navigating them with care and determination, we can reach the summit finding clarity, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment. My work with Dirty Hands Project reflects this philosophy, as I strive to promote mental wellness, encourage open dialogue, and provide tools and support for those navigating their own journeys.

By ensuring children receive the support they need as early as possible, we empower them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Jessica Pelletier
Mental health was almost never discussed when I was young. In fact, I naively believed people could simply ‘snap out of it.’ As I’ve grown older and experienced life with more awareness and compassion, I’ve learned just how complex and overwhelming the internal battles can be for so many. What happens inside a person, the fear, the sadness, the confusion, the weight of invisible struggles can profoundly shape and sometimes overpower their daily lives.
This understanding has strengthened my commitment to supporting mental health advocacy through Dirty Hands Project. I want to help create a world where conversations about mental well-being are open, honest, and stigma-free, so no one feels alone or misunderstood. Through education, compassion, and community, we can make a lasting difference.
